Alain Beretz
Professor emeritus of pharmacology at the University of Strasbourg, his research activity has focused on three main areas: pharmacology of natural substances (especially plant polyphenols), antithrombotic pharmacology (platelets, endothelium), and vascular pharmacology, principally aimed at chronic proliferative vascular diseases.
He was vice-president of the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg in charge of industrial relations from 2001 to 2006. He was elected President of the Louis Pasteur University (2007-2008), and then of the University of Strasbourg from 2009 to 2016. He was then appointed Director General for Research and Innovation at the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, from September 2016 to August 2018. Then he was entrusted by the French Prime Minister with a mission on European universities (2018-2020) and was interim director of the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC) (2019-2020).
He served as President of LERU (League of European Research Universities) from 2013 to 2016, after three years as a member of its Board of Directors. He chairs COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) from 2021 to 2023, IEEPI (European Enterprise and Intellectual Property Institute) since 2020, and Ksilink (a Franco-German public-private scientific partnership for drug discovery) since 2019. He has been a member of the University Council of the Franco-German University since 2021 and chaired the jury for the 2022 entrance exam of the French National Institute of Public Service (INSP).
A knight of the Legion of Honor, Officer of the National Order of Merit, and Commander of the Palmes Académiques, he has been an associate member of the French National Academy of Pharmacy since 2018, and of the Academia Europaea since 2021.
