Peter Faller
Peter Faller a professor at the University of Strasbourg and head of the "Biometals and Biological Chemistry" team at the Strasbourg Institute of Chemistry (UMR 7177).
After obtaining the teacher's diploma at the "Lehrerseminar" in Kreuzlingen (CH), he studied at the University of Zurich and obtained a diploma (equivalent to master's degree) and a doctorate in Biochemistry. He continued his career with a post-doctoral stay at the CEA in Saclay (F) and at the Institute of Plant Biochemistry in Freiburg (D). In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University Paul Sabatier, Toulouse and set up a research group at the “Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination” (LCC) of the CNRS. In 2015 he joined the University of Strasbourg on the position he currently holds.
Peter Faller's work focuses on bioinorganic chemistry and metals in biology. He is interested in the roles of metal ions in biological systems at the molecular level, the mechanisms of action of essential metal ions and therapeutic approaches based on metals. His team made significant advances in the understanding of metallic complexes of Cu(I/II), Zn(II) or Fe(II) with the amyloid-beta peptide, the peptide which is the major constituent of amyloid plaques, a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. His current research focuses on sensors for the detection of metals in biological media, the mechanistic study of chelators complexed with copper, zinc or iron in their anticancer activity, and finally the development of antimicrobial metal-peptide complexes.
He has been Deputy Director of the UMR 7177 since 2018 and currently chairs the international committee that supervises the international and biennial ISABC conference "International Symposium for Applied Bioinorganic Chemistry". He participates, or has participated, in the editorial teams of several journals. Peter Faller has been appointed senior member of the “Institut Universitaire de France (IUF)” in 2021.
